Some of the most distinctive wines in the world grow on Volcanic soils, such as Etna, the Canary Islands, the Azores. These soils impart a mix of salinity and smokiness on the wine that will definitely challenge your taste buds. Fun fact for the Ungrafted namesake: the sandy volcanic soils in a few of these places keep phylloxera away, which means many of those vines are still growing on their own roots, ungrafted.
