Ayunta Nerello Mascalese Bianco Terre Siciliane IGT 2023
This beautifully unusual white wine from Sicily honors tradition while pushing forward with the new. Crafted from 100% Nerello Mascalese—a grape typically used for reds—this wine is made by pressing the red grapes early, with no skin contact, to produce a wine with white wine clarity but red-grape personality. The vines are very old (50-100 years), nestled on Etna’s volcanic soils at ~700 m elevation on the cooler northern slopes.
After harvesting, the juice is fermented in stainless steel using indigenous yeasts, then aged in cement tanks on the lees for about 6-7 months. This winemaking path gives it clean structure with mineral, flinty undertones and keeps the wine fresh and honest.
Think bright orchard fruit (like apple and peach), citrus peel, delicate white flowers—wrapped in a backbone of volcanic minerality, and a lingering saline finish. It’s crisp, balanced, and energetic.
Match with citrus-dressed seafood, meaty fish, white-sauce pastas, grilled white meat, or even crunchy greens and root vegetables. Also lovely on its own as a clean, refreshing sip.
