Cosse et Maisonneuve 'Le Combal' Cahors 2021

$28.00

This is an excellent example of rich yet restrained Malbec from southwestern France, in the ancient Cahors appellation. This is Malbec’s historic home, which was at its apogee of fame in the 14th and 15th century. Phylloxera, wars and the shadow of nearby Bordeaux contributed to the appellation falling into relative obscurity, but the renewed global interest in Malbec-based wines and a new generation of winemaker settling into the relatively affordable region has led to a renaissance of sorts.

Known for its dark fruit profile—think black cherry, plum, and cassis—it delivers spice, earth, and fine-grained structure rather than overripe, jammy fruit notes. Tannins are bold but balanced, keeping the wine structured and age-worthy. The blend is mostly Malbec, with a touch of Merlot and Tannat.

Serve with grilled lamb, duck confit, or game meats. A thick-cut steak or cassoulet would also shine next to this wine’s density and spice.
