Domaine Brun-Avril Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2020
Jean-Jacques & Nathalie Brun established Domaine Brun-Avril in 2008 from 5 hectares of vines they received as part of an inheritance. Their son Henri joined them in 2020. They farm organically in practice and are now in official conversion to organic production. The vineyards sit on classic cailloux roulés (rolled pebbles) and clay-sand soils in lieu-dit Farguerol and Pied de Baud, nurturing old Grenache vines alongside Mourvèdre and Syrah.
This Grenache-dominated blend (typically roughly 80%) is made in a traditional, slow-paced style: grapes are mostly destemmed, lightly crushed, and fermented cool to preserve nuance; extended maceration and gentle extraction build structure, followed by 18+ months ageing in large oak (600 L demi-muids for Grenache/Mourvèdre, 300 L barrels for Syrah) before blending and bottling.
In the glass, the 2020 vintage shows classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape depth and spice: generous red and black fruits (think ripe cherry, raspberry, and cassis), complemented by hints of garrigue herbs, pepper, cocoa and roasted notes. It’s medium-to-full-bodied with balanced acidity and supple tannins, framed by savory complexity and a long, expressive finish that feels both rich and refined.
This wine is ideal with braised lamb shoulder, herbed roast pork, Provençal stews or slow-cooked game — dishes with savory depth to match its spice-infused fruit and layered structure.
