Domaine de Colette Fleurie 2023
This red from Jacky Gauthier and his family is a classic expression of Gamay from one of Beaujolais’s most elegant crus. Coming from steep slopes in the heart of Fleurie, this wine reflects the power of the hillside terroir along with the finesse that the appellation is known for.
The grapes are grown on granite soils with ferruginous (iron-rich) elements, contributing vibrant mineral energy and lively acidity. The vines are tended sustainably — with very low yields — and harvested by hand at ideal ripeness to retain freshness and aromatic purity.
After hand harvest, the fruit is destemmed and fermented using indigenous yeasts in concrete and stainless steel with gentle extraction. Maceration is moderate, emphasizing fine tannins and fresh fruit rather than power. The wine is then matured briefly in tank before bottling, keeping its focus on purity and clarity.
Fleurie’s signature shows beautifully here: bright red fruit — think raspberry, cherry, and cranberry — layered with floral notes like violet and peony. There’s just enough spice and a whisper of earth to keep it grounded. Medium-bodied and lithe, the palate is guided by silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a mineral seam running through to a refreshing finish.
Perfect with herb-roasted chicken, mushroom risotto, duck breast with berry compote, or a board of soft cheeses and charcuterie.
