J.L. Chave Selections ‘Mon Coeur’ Cotes du Rhone 2023
This wine could be summed up as ‘not your typical Côtes du Rhône’
it’s a négociant bottling from Rhône legend Jean-Louis Chave with serious pedigree and precision. Sourced from top-tier terroirs in and around Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Vinsobres, Rasteau, and Cairanne) this wine blends roughly 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache, with vines ranging from 20 to 60 years old. The Syrah, mostly from north-facing slopes in Vinsobres (which Jean-Louis now owns), brings lifted aromatics and striking clarity, while the Grenache adds richness and depth.
Despite qualifying for the more prestigious Villages classification, Chave keeps it labeled as Côtes-du-Rhône for stylistic freedom. Each parcel is fermented separately in stainless steel, then blended and aged in large Stockinger barrels before bottling (previously used for his St Joseph Clos Florentin), ensuring structure without overt oak.
In the glass, “Mon Cœur” lives up to its name—it’s generous, expressive, and pure-hearted. Expect vibrant black cherry and plum, cracked pepper, wild herbs, and stony minerality. Thanks to the altitude and limestone-rich soils of Vinsobres (900 ft!), this vintage shows off real energy, freshness, and detail.
Pair with grilled lamb, rosemary-roasted chicken, lentil stew, or a juicy burger with herbs de Provence. It’s classic Rhône with a Chave twist—refined, soulful, and built to overdeliver.
