Giroud, Pinot Noir, Cretot, Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Beaune 2020
Camille Giroud’s “Au Crêtot” is a fresh and elegant Pinot Noir from a single vineyard situated at 400 m elevation in the rolling limestone plateau of the Hautes-Côtes, west of the Côte de Beaune proper. Historically considered too high in elevation for Pinot Noir to reach peak maturity, this is an appellation that has benefited greatly from climate change and dry/warm vintages like 2020.
The sustainably farmed grapes are hand-sorted, gently de-stemmed, and fermented with native yeasts in open vats for up to 25 days—then aged for 15 months in old barrels and briefly rested in stainless before bottling, without fining.
The result is a charming, medium-bodied red with bright raspberry, cherry, forest-floor undertones, a touch of cigar box spice, and soft tannins. It’s graceful yet approachable, a perfect partner for roast chicken, turkey, veal, or even mushroom-rich dishes— It’s a wine that’s ready to drink now but will continue to develop for another 5-10 years easily.
